Michael robinson
Michael Robinson is a New York–based Creative Director whose work explores how design creates meaning, and how that meaning shapes culture.
For more than two decades, he has created identities, campaigns, visual systems, and experiences for artists, global brands, cultural institutions, and emerging communities.
His collaborators include Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Coca-Cola, Lincoln Center, Smithsonian, Burning Man Project, Levi's, Under Armour, Pantone and Howard University.
design is never neutral
Robinson's creative practice begins with the belief that design does more than communicate.
It shapes perception.
It creates relationships.
It influences behavior.
It gives ideas visible forms and determines how those ideas move through culture.
This approach connects his work as a Creative Director with his parallel practice as an artist and educator.
UNIVERSUS
At the center of Robinson's artistic research is Universus, an ongoing investigation into how marks become icons, icons become symbols, and symbols become emblems carrying memory, identity, authority, and power.
The work asks:
Who creates meaning?
How does meaning change?
Who has the authority to define a symbol?
How do visual systems influence behavior and identity?
These questions move freely between his artistic and professional practices, informing his approach to identities, organizations, communities, and cultural systems.
Artist Thinking. Strategic Execution.
Robinson's internationally exhibited art practice explores symbols, language, technology, and human connection.
His professional practice translates that research into strategy, creative direction, and design for the organizations and individuals shaping contemporary culture.
He is also an educator at Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, and Kean University, where his teaching extends this investigation to the next generation of designers.
